Crunching numbers on 120 years of music charts

by Josh Kimball

Andy Baio of Waxy posts a two-part analysis of The Whitburn Project, an undertaking by some Usenet music enthusiasts that takes a crack at crunching 120 years of music chart data. (See the intro here and an analysis of pop song longevity here.)

The data are copious, and include everything from average song duration to tracking of one-hit wonders (the 60s was the decade with the most). Well worth digging into.
