Links for 1.11.08: New Yorker on Bon Iver, Bono in the Times, gamers in Poetry, me home…

*Report: I stepped away for a bit, so apologies if any of this is old news.

*Articles: The most enjoyable read waiting for me upon my return from the vast halls of hell was this piece by Sasha Frere-Jones in the New Yorker about Bon Iver (aka Justin Vernon). In it, Frere-Jones writes “The songs from “For Emma,” which Vernon once described as merely “demos” to his friends, feel complete, now that he has had more than a year to play them live.”

Frere-Jones goes on to interview Vernon for a site video, and mentions the new Bon Iver EP, “Blood Bank” in a blog post.

*Articles: The least enjoyable read upon my return from the vast halls of hell was this article by Bono, which appeared on the op-ed page of the New York Times. Because it’s Bono. Also, because “Glasses clinking clicking, clashing crashing in Gaelic revelry: swinging doors, sweethearts falling in and out of the season’s blessings, family feuds subsumed or resumed.”

*Poetry: From “The First Line is the Deepest” by Kim Addonizio in Poetry

“Why does one month have to be the cruelest,
can’t they all be equally cruel? I have seen the best

gamers of your generation, joysticking their mi tanks through
the sewage-filled streets.”

*2008: Hype Machine ran its Music Blog Zeitgeist of 2008 list. MGMT tops the artist list, ahead of Radiohead.

*Nuptials: Fergie got married to that Dude from Las Vegas. Remember when Fergie was the Listenerd familiar? Back when she was performing regularly with the Black Eyed Peas? And becoming incontinent on stage?

*Twitter: Do you want to follow Karl Rove on Twitter? Also, Ray Pruit. (You should know who Ray Pruit is. If you’re old.)

*TV: Look at these pictures of the abandoned soundstage from HBO’s The Wire. While listening to Bon Iver. And being a big, emotional baby. [medialoper]

*Posters: Shepard Fairey issues an Obama Inauguration poster. I’m looking forward to the Obama 100 Days poster and the Obama Bought a Dog poster. Also, $$$$$. [coolhunting]

Video: A phonograph playing soothingly – IN MY HOME

1) Creating a video of a phonograph playing soothingly is more difficult than it appears to your average asshole internet commentator.

2) The video quality of the Flip is bad.

3) HOW SOOTHING IS THIS, EFFERS?

4) Ruby Tuesday.

5) Warped!

Video: A phonofiddle rocks Swedish X-mas music

Those of you who follow the Listenerd religiously know of my love for strange instruments, and in particular, the Phonofiddle. What follows is footage of a phonofiddle being used to play the Swedish Christmas song “Nu tändas tusen juleljus” by the Swedish comedy group Galenskaparna and Aftershave.

(My wife, commenting on the video upon incidentally hearing it, “Is that Andy Kaufman?”)

[thanks, anders]

I will be at Nerd World for a while.

Posting: Sporadic. Sporadic, but still HIGHLY COMPELLING.

If you want to know what a highly fictionalized version of me is doing every minute of every day, you can look here.

I wouldn’t advise it, though.

Also: I adore you all.

Also: Goodbye forever. Or at least for several hours.

Video: Roald Bradstock throws an iPod 154 yards

I don’t know if it’s real, fake, stupid or brilliant, but that outfit looks like it’s straight out of Hipster Runoff.

Music: Bon Iver, Forever Ago

Recently, I got a flotilla of old music recorded by Justin Vernon (Bon Iver before he was Bon Iver), including self-recorded songs, as well as music from Hazleton’s and DeYarmond Edison. Just starting to dig in.

Here’s an excellent self-recorded tune from Bon Iver (well, just Justin Vernon at the time he recorded it) called “Ring Out.” It is from way, way back. He was less falsetto and more Springsteeny back then.

Anyway, go to Mr. Vernon’s MySpace page to snoop around, and by all means purchase his new EP, Blood Bank (it comes out January 20).

(Also, apologies for sending you to the tumblr for “Ring Out”; ick!)

Links for 1.2.09: Prince’s albums, torrenting records, vinyl bling

*Labels: Open Your Eyes Records distributes all of its new music via BitTorrent. This may come as a shock to you (geek that I am probably perceived to be), but I have never torrented anything. Because I am retarded. And about as impatient as they come.

*Prince: Supposedly, Prince is planning on putting out 3 new albums in 2009. He also seems to be regretting those anti-gay comments in the New Yorker right about now.

*Fashion: Vling is vinyl bling – jewelry made out of old records. There are SKULLS. [spinning indie]

*Sales: Go to Coolfer for charts (with COLORS) breaking out music sales for 2008. All things considered, not bad. I mean, we’re in a global economic meltdown.

*Economy: People are taking less pay in order to have any job at all. I’m crying on the outside. And inside.

*Fashion: The party’s over for makers of novelty New Year’s Eve eyewear.

*Green: Landsharing connects people with the yard space for great gardens with gardeners who want to expand their growing potential. Look, not everything in the world is about music. Also, I’m a shitty gardener.

*Mashups: Jay-Z vs Radiohead = Hovahead. [radiohead at ease]

*Local: Watch some video of Mark Mallman on New Year’s Eve at MNStories.

*Twitter: Tweetree actually looks pretty useful – though if I can’t star things from inside it, I can’t use it.

*Food: Where the Wild Things Are bento boxes. Wow. [neatorama]
